American offensive tackle David Lane Johnson was born on May 8, 1990, and plays for the National Football League (NFL) Philadelphia Eagles. In the 2013 NFL Draft, the Eagles selected him fourth overall. Prior to joining the Oklahoma Sooners, he played collegiate football with the Kilgore Rangers.
Early Life
Johnson, who was born in Groveton, Texas, played football and participated in track at Groveton High School. In football, he was named All-District and an honorable mention All-State quarterback.
Johnson participated in the throwing competitions in track and field. With a high throw of 15.21 meters (49 feet 7 inches), he placed fourth in the shot put competition at the 2008 UIL 1A State Championships.
College Career
In 2008, Johnson played tight end and quarterback for the Kilgore Rangers football team while attending Kilgore College in East Texas. Johnson had 510 throwing yards, 3 touchdowns, 7 interceptions, and a 52.4% completion rate in his one season at Kilgore.
He played for the Oklahoma Sooners from 2009 to 2012 after transferring to the University of Oklahoma following his freshman year. During his redshirt season, he started off as a practice squad quarterback before switching to tight end in 2010 and defensive end again in 2011.
In 2011, Johnson was asked to try out as a backup tackle by offensive line coach Bruce Kittle after two starting linemen suffered injuries. Kittle shifted him permanently to offensive tackle after being impressed by his footwork and innate blocking skills. Johnson started the final 12 games of the season after taking over as the Sooners’ starting right tackle two games later. He moved to left tackle as a senior in 2012, starting 11 of 13 games, and CBSSports.com named him a third-team All-American.
On June 25, 2023, he was admitted into the Senior Bowl Hall of Fame.
Personal Life
From 2013 till 2022, Johnson was wed to Chelsea Goodman; the two of them had three kids. The former high jumper Goodman is the daughter of former defensive end John Goodman of the Steelers.
Johnson gave Kilgore College $500,000 in 2019 to build The Lane Athletic Performance Center, which debuted in 2021.
The Philly Specials, a group that Johnson sings with alongside colleagues Jason Kelce and Jordan Mailata, put out three Christmas CDs between 2022 and 2024.
Johnson and Jason Kelce helped Rey Mysterio and Andrade in their bout at Lincoln Financial Field during WrestleMania XL in 2024.
Professional Career
Pre-Draft
Johnson accepted invites to the 2013 Senior Bowl, as did teammate Landry Jones. Johnson displayed remarkable balance, body control, and footwork throughout the drills. He was a top candidate for the first round because of his impressive performance.
He placed first in the vertical jump and second overall among offensive linemen in the broad jump and 40-yard sprint at the 2013 NFL Scouting Combine. Johnson also participated in several private workouts with the Philadelphia Eagles, New York Jets, and Carolina Panthers in addition to Oklahoma’s pro day.
He was rated as the third-best offensive lineman prospect and was predicted to be selected in the first round.

The Eagles selected Johnson fourth overall in the 2013 NFL Draft. He agreed to a four-year contract of $19.85 million with a signing bonus of $12.81 million.
As a rookie, Johnson started all 16 games and contributed to the Eagles’ NFC East championship. He also started his first postseason game in the NFC Wild Card matchup against the Saints.
2014
Johnson started the final 14 games despite serving a four-game suspension for using performance-enhancing substances. He was selected to the PFF All-Pro Team and only gave up one sack that season.
2015
Despite multiple injuries, Johnson started all 16 games, including two at left tackle when Jason Peters was inactive. He was ranked as one of the top right tackles by Pro Football Focus.
2016
Johnson became the highest-paid right tackle in the NFL when he agreed to a six-year, $63 million agreement. His contract was partially worthless due to a PED offense that resulted in a ten-game suspension. After making a comeback in Week 16, Johnson sued the NFL and NFLPA.
He started six games that season as the Eagles finished 7–9.
2017
Johnson started 15 games in the Eagles’ 13–3 record and Super Bowl LII victory over the New England Patriots. He was selected for his first Pro Bowl and placed 95th on the 2018 NFL Top 100 Players list.
2019–2020
Johnson became the highest-paid offensive lineman when he agreed to a four-year, $72 million agreement. In July 2020, he was added to the reserve/COVID-19 list, and then in December, he was added to the injured reserve list.
2021
After suffering from melancholy for three games, Johnson came back to score his first touchdown on a 5-yard pass from Jalen Hurts. He received a Second-Team All-Pro designation.
2022
When Johnson went 26 games without giving up a sack, he set an NFL record. Due to an abdominal ailment, he missed the remainder of the regular season. The Chiefs defeated the Eagles in Super Bowl LVII.
2023
Johnson signed a one-year extension through the 2026 season with $30 million guaranteed.
2024
In Super Bowl LIX, Johnson started 15 games and helped the Eagles overcome the Chiefs 40–22 to win another Super Bowl. He was one of just four Eagles to play for both winning teams in the Super Bowl.
2025
Johnson agreed to a one-year extension worth $8 million with an additional $30 million in guarantees on March 17, 2025.
